What was McDonald’s original service-system name, used before the company became a global chain?

The story behind the answer

McDonald’s original service-system name was the Speedee Service System.

Richard and Maurice McDonald developed the system at their restaurant in San Bernardino, California, after redesigning the business around speed, consistency, and a limited menu. It replaced the traditional carhop model with an assembly-line approach in which food could be prepared quickly and served in standardized portions.

The system’s name was reinforced by Speedee, the smiling chef mascot used in early McDonald’s branding. The connection between the service method and the mascot made speed the central promise of the original identity. Burgers, fries, and shakes were prepared through a tightly organized process rather than individually customized meals.

Ray Kroc later expanded McDonald’s through franchising, carrying the principles of the Speedee Service System into a much larger organization. The system is an important predecessor of modern fast-food operations. It is sometimes mistaken for a slogan or a restaurant chain name, but it was specifically the McDonald brothers’ operating and service model.
