What was McDonald's original restaurant-service brand, introduced by the McDonald brothers in 1948?

The story behind the answer

McDonald's original restaurant-service brand, introduced by the McDonald brothers in 1948, was the Speedee Service System.

The system reorganized the restaurant around a limited menu, standardized preparation, and fast counter service. Richard and Maurice McDonald developed it at their San Bernardino, California, restaurant after redesigning their operation around hamburgers, fries, and beverages.

Speedee was also represented by a chef character used in early McDonald's branding. That character should not be confused with Ronald McDonald, who became the company's best-known advertising mascot in the 1960s.

The Speedee Service System helped establish the operating model later associated with fast food: repeatable procedures, consistent portions, and rapid production. Ray Kroc later expanded the McDonald's franchise system, but the basic efficiency idea originated with the McDonald brothers.
