Speedee was McDonald's original mascot logo before the Golden Arches replaced it in 1962.
Speedee was a chef-like figure used to represent the McDonald brothers' emphasis on fast service. The name connected directly with the restaurant's operating promise, making the character a visual shorthand for speed and efficiency. Early McDonald's signs and promotional materials used Speedee before the chain settled on the arches as its main corporate mark.
Speedee is easy to confuse with later McDonald's characters. Ronald McDonald became the best-known human mascot, while Grimace and the Hamburglar belonged to the later advertising world. Speedee came from the company's earlier visual identity and was not part of the later McDonaldland cast.
Replacing the character with the arches made the brand simpler and more adaptable. A geometric symbol could work across buildings, signs, uniforms, packaging, and international advertising without depending on a mascot illustration.
