McDonald’s original mascot, introduced in 1948 as a speedy chef, was Speedee.
Speedee represented the McDonald’s Speedee Service System, the restaurant’s early emphasis on quick, standardized food preparation. The character was usually shown wearing a chef’s hat and carrying a hamburger-shaped sign.
Speedee appeared before Ronald McDonald and before the Golden Arches became the company’s dominant visual symbol. The mascot’s name is sometimes confused with Speedy Gonzales, the Warner Bros. cartoon character, but they are unrelated.
McDonald’s later shifted its advertising toward Ronald McDonald, McDonaldland characters, product imagery, and the arches. Even so, Speedee is important because he connects the brand to the restaurant’s original service promise rather than to its later family-oriented identity.
