Mac Tonight was McDonald’s late-1980s advertising character known for his crescent-moon-shaped head, dark sunglasses, and singing. He promoted McDonald’s evening business and became especially associated with a rewritten version of “Mack the Knife.”
The character first appeared in 1986 advertising created for Southern California McDonald’s restaurants. The campaign was successful enough that McDonald’s expanded Mac Tonight nationally. His visual identity was deliberately different from the McDonaldland characters: he was a suave adult performer rather than a child-oriented fantasy resident.
Mac Tonight is often remembered as a mascot, but his central purpose was daypart marketing—encouraging customers to visit McDonald’s at night. The character was later withdrawn after a lawsuit by Bobby Darin’s estate objected to the use of “Mack the Knife” imagery and music associated with Darin’s performance.
