Speedee was McDonald’s first restaurant mascot, introduced in 1948 and named after the Speedee Service System.
The character was a small chef figure with a hamburger-shaped head and an “I’m Speedee” sign. He represented the McDonald brothers’ streamlined restaurant model, which emphasized rapid counter service and standardized food preparation.
Speedee appeared before Ronald McDonald and before the full McDonaldland cast. As McDonald’s advertising became more focused on families and children, Ronald gradually became the company’s dominant mascot, and Speedee disappeared from most consumer-facing branding.
Speedee is sometimes confused with later hamburger-themed characters, especially the 1950s character known as the Happy Burger. The historical connection is the name: Speedee directly echoed McDonald’s 1948 service system and communicated the brand’s original promise of speed.
