What was McDonald’s first national advertising slogan?

The story behind the answer

“Look for the Golden Arches” was McDonald’s first national advertising slogan.

The slogan appeared in McDonald’s early national advertising as the chain expanded beyond its original California base. It directed motorists toward the distinctive yellow arches used on restaurant buildings and connected the visual sign with the promise of finding a McDonald’s location.

This wording reflects an important stage in the company’s branding history. Before the Golden Arches became a universally familiar standalone logo, advertising had to teach customers what the symbol meant and why they should notice it. The slogan therefore worked as both a location cue and a brand-building device.

It is often confused with later McDonald’s lines, including “You Deserve a Break Today,” which became one of the chain’s best-known campaigns in the 1970s, and “I’m Lovin’ It,” introduced much later. Those slogans belong to different advertising eras.
