Speedee was McDonald’s early corporate mascot, used before the McDonaldland characters became prominent.
Speedee was depicted as a small chef-like figure and represented the speed of McDonald’s service. The name echoed the fast-service identity that the McDonald brothers promoted when their restaurant system developed in California. Speedee also appeared in early signs and branding before the company’s later character universe took shape.
Speedee is sometimes confused with Ronald McDonald because Ronald became the better-known public mascot in the 1960s. Speedee belongs to an earlier phase of the company’s visual identity. He is also distinct from McDonaldland figures such as the Hamburglar, Grimace, and Mayor McCheese.
The change from Speedee-centered branding to arches, Ronald McDonald, and McDonaldland reflects McDonald’s shift from a regional drive-in identity to a nationally recognizable family restaurant brand. Speedee therefore provides an important link between the company’s early operating promise and its later character-led advertising.
