Answer
11th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers
J.R.R. Tolkien served with the 11th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers during the Battle of the Somme.
Tolkien was commissioned as a temporary second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1915 after studying at Oxford. He served with the 11th Battalion during the Somme offensive in 1916, one of the largest and bloodiest campaigns of the First World War.
He developed trench fever and was sent back to England in October 1916. Most of the officers in his battalion were later killed, an experience that deeply affected him. Tolkien’s wartime service informed his understanding of friendship, loss, endurance, and industrial destruction, although his fiction should not be reduced to a direct one-to-one allegory of the war.
The battalion designation matters because Tolkien’s military career is sometimes summarized only as “service in the Lancashire Fusiliers.” The more precise unit was the 11th Battalion. His later mythological writings drew on many sources, including medieval literature, language, personal experience, and broad reflections on power and moral choice.
