Answer
Signals officer
Answer
Signals officer
J.R.R. Tolkien served as a signals officer during the First World War.
Tolkien was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers in 1915. He trained in signalling, a vital military specialty involving communication between units, and went to France in 1916. He took part in the Battle of the Somme before becoming ill with trench fever and returning to England.
His wartime experience affected his life and later writing, though simple one-to-one claims that particular fictional scenes directly reproduce specific battles can be misleading. Tolkien’s mythology developed over many years and drew on languages, medieval literature, personal experience and broader historical themes.
Tolkien was not a medical officer, artilleryman or naval officer. His military service was with the British Army, and signalling was his assigned professional function during his time at the front.
