What was J.R.R. Tolkien’s first major professional project after World War I?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien’s first major professional project after World War I was work on the Oxford English Dictionary.

After returning from military service and recovering from trench fever, Tolkien joined the staff working on the dictionary in 1919. He served as an assistant lexicographer and worked particularly on words beginning with the letter W, examining their origins, meanings, and historical usage.

The experience gave him practical training in historical linguistics and showed how a language’s vocabulary develops across centuries. Tolkien later drew on that expertise when designing the languages of Middle-earth, although his fictional languages were not simply reconstructed historical English.

The work is sometimes overlooked because Tolkien is chiefly remembered as a novelist and philologist. Before holding academic posts at Leeds and Oxford, however, he had already gained professional experience analyzing English words and their histories. That background helped support his later teaching and literary scholarship.
