Answer
Assistant lexicographer on the Oxford English Dictionary
J.R.R. Tolkien’s first civilian job after the First World War was as an assistant lexicographer on the Oxford English Dictionary. He worked on the dictionary in 1919 and 1920, after returning from military service.
His assignment focused particularly on words beginning with the letter W. The work required tracing word histories, comparing historical quotations, and explaining changes in meaning and form. This gave Tolkien practical experience in the detailed historical study of English.
Tolkien later recalled that dictionary work helped him understand how words develop through contact between languages. His knowledge of Germanic languages, Old English, Welsh, and other linguistic traditions became important both to his scholarship and to his invented languages.
After leaving the dictionary project, Tolkien became a lecturer at the University of Leeds. He returned to Oxford in 1925 as Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon. His dictionary work is therefore an early professional stage before his best-known academic appointments.
