What was J.R.R. Tolkien’s birthplace in 1892?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein in 1892. He was born John Ronald Reuel Tolkien on 3 January 1892 in the Orange Free State, then a British-colonial territory in southern Africa and now part of South Africa.

His father, Arthur Tolkien, worked as a bank manager in Bloemfontein. After Arthur died in 1896, Tolkien’s mother, Mabel, moved with Tolkien and his younger brother Hilary to England. Tolkien spent most of his later childhood in the Birmingham area, and English landscapes became more important to his daily life and imagination.

Bloemfontein is often confused with Tolkien’s English hometowns because his literary identity is strongly associated with Oxford and the English Midlands. His birthplace nonetheless appears in biographical records and helps explain why some accounts describe him as South African-born. Tolkien lived from 1892 until 1973 and became a British writer, scholar, and philologist.
