What was J.R.R. Tolkien’s birthplace, according to biographical records?

The story behind the answer

J.R.R. Tolkien was born in Bloemfontein, in what was then the Orange Free State, in 1892.

Tolkien was born on 3 January 1892 to Arthur Reuel Tolkien and Mabel Tolkien. His father worked in a bank, and the family was living in Bloemfontein because of Arthur’s employment. Tolkien spent his earliest years there before moving with his mother and younger brother to England after his father’s death in 1896.

The family eventually settled in Sarehole, near Birmingham. Tolkien later drew on memories of the rural landscape around Sarehole when imagining the Shire, although Middle-earth cannot be reduced to a direct map of his childhood home. His mother also played an important role in his education, teaching him languages and encouraging his interest in mythology.

Oxford became strongly associated with Tolkien’s adult life, but it was not his birthplace. He studied and worked there, and he held academic posts at Oxford University for much of his career.
