Joan of Arc’s family name is commonly written today as d’Arc.
In French, Joan is usually called Jeanne d’Arc. Her father was Jacques d’Arc, a farmer from Domrémy, and her mother was Isabelle Romée. Medieval records used several spellings and naming practices, so the form of the surname was not completely standardized during Joan’s lifetime.
Joan herself was also identified by the nickname “the Maid of Orléans,” especially after the 1429 campaign. That title is a sobriquet rather than her family name. Modern English usage often translates Jeanne d’Arc as Joan of Arc, while French usage retains Jeanne d’Arc.
