What was J.K. Rowling’s first published Harry Potter story under the name Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone?

The story behind the answer

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was J.K. Rowling’s first published Harry Potter story.

Bloomsbury published the novel in the United Kingdom in 1997. It introduces Harry as an orphan who discovers on his eleventh birthday that he is a wizard and has been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

The book established characters and ideas that shaped the six sequels, including Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts, and the continuing threat of Lord Voldemort. Its success turned Rowling into an internationally known author.

In the United States, the novel was published under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The different title reflects an American publishing decision, so the two titles refer to the same first book.
