What was Istanbul called in the historical setting of Assassin’s Creed Revelations?

The story behind the answer

Istanbul was called Constantinople in the historical setting of Assassin’s Creed Revelations.

Revelations is set mainly in Constantinople during the early sixteenth century, when the city was the capital of the Ottoman Empire. The game follows an older Ezio Auditore as he searches for Altaïr’s lost memories and investigates a conflict involving the Ottoman Assassins and Templars.

The city was historically known as Constantinople for centuries. The name Istanbul became increasingly common in later periods and became the official name of the city in the twentieth century. Using Constantinople for the game’s setting therefore reflects its historical context rather than a separate city.

The game presents districts corresponding to areas of the historic city, including Galata and the Imperial District. Sultan Bayezid II and his sons appear in the political background, while Prince Suleiman is an important character during the story.
