Answer
Sméagol
What was Gollum's name before he became corrupted? Before the One Ring twisted him, Gollum was known as Sméagol. He was a Stoor Hobbit who lived near the Gladden Fields, a region along the River Anduin. His earlier life is explained by Gandalf in “The Shadow of the Past,” a chapter of The Fellowship of the Ring.
On Sméagol's birthday, he went fishing with his relative Déagol. Déagol was pulled underwater by a fish and discovered the One Ring in the riverbed. Sméagol immediately demanded it as a birthday present. When Déagol refused, Sméagol murdered him and took the Ring, beginning his corruption.
The Ring prolonged Sméagol's life but gradually damaged his body, mind, and relationships. His family eventually rejected him, and he withdrew beneath the Misty Mountains. There, his repeated swallowing and choking sounds earned him the nickname “Gollum.” Déagol is therefore not his former name; Déagol was the relative who found the Ring. In Tolkien's constructed history, Sméagol is connected with the idea of burrowing or creeping.
