Khazad-dûm
Answer
Khazad-dûm
The Dwarvish name for the realm of Moria is Khazad-dûm.
Khazad-dûm was the ancient underground city-kingdom of Durin’s Folk beneath the Misty Mountains. In Tolkien’s constructed language Khuzdul, the name means “Dwarf-mansion” or “Dwarrowdelf,” emphasizing both the Dwarves’ identity and their enormous subterranean stronghold.
The realm became extraordinarily wealthy after the discovery of mithril, a rare, beautiful and exceptionally strong metal. The Dwarves’ mining eventually went too deep, awakening a Balrog later known as Durin’s Bane. After the creature killed King Durin VI and his son, the Dwarves abandoned the city.
“Moria” is not the original Dwarvish name. It is a Sindarin name meaning “Black Chasm” or “Black Pit,” and became associated with the abandoned, darkened realm. Other peoples also had translated names for the place, including “Dwarrowdelf” in archaic English. Erebor, Nogrod and Gundabad are separate Dwarven locations, not names for Moria.
