The golden hall of the King of Rohan in Edoras is Meduseld.
Meduseld was the great royal hall of the Kings of Rohan, built on a high terrace atop the hill at the centre of Edoras. Its thatched roof appeared golden from a distance, giving rise to its familiar description as the Golden Hall. It was both a residence and the ceremonial heart of Rohan’s horse-lord culture.
The hall was built by Brego, the second King of Rohan and son of the kingdom’s founder, Eorl the Young. It was completed in T.A. 2569. At the feast celebrating its completion, Brego’s son Baldor made the reckless vow that led him toward the Paths of the Dead, linking Meduseld to one of Rohan’s darkest legends.
Tolkien shaped Meduseld partly from the Anglo-Saxon mead hall Heorot in Beowulf. The name itself comes from Old English and means “mead-hall” or “feasting hall.” Minas Tirith is Gondor’s capital, Hornburg is a fortress in Helm’s Deep, and Dunharrow is a refuge in the White Mountains.
