Georgia O'Keeffe continued to be known professionally as O'Keeffe after marrying Alfred Stieglitz.
O'Keeffe was born Georgia Totto O'Keeffe, and her surname remained the name attached to her paintings, exhibitions, and public identity. She married Stieglitz in 1924, but did not become known as “Georgia Stieglitz” in the art world.
The spelling “Stieglitz” itself is also important: it contains “ie,” not “ei.” Stieglitz was a prominent photographer and gallery owner, and his support helped establish O'Keeffe's early reputation.
Her continued use of O'Keeffe reflects the fact that her artistic identity was already established and remained distinct from her husband's. Today, “Georgia O'Keeffe” is the standard name used by museums, scholars, and the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum.
