The Ford Falcon was Ford Motor Company’s first compact car launched in North America for 1960.
Ford developed the Falcon in response to growing interest in smaller, more economical cars. It used a conventional front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and was offered in body styles including sedan, station wagon, and pickup-based variants.
The Falcon was designed to be inexpensive to buy and operate rather than sporty or luxurious. Its compact dimensions helped Ford compete with smaller domestic cars and imported vehicles. The model sold strongly during its early years and became an important part of Ford’s product strategy.
The Falcon also has a connection to the Ford Mustang. Early Mustang development used the Falcon’s basic platform, although the Mustang received distinctive styling and a different market position. The Falcon name continued in several international markets after North American production ended.
