What was Family Communications called before its 1971 rename?

The story behind the answer

Before its 1971 rename, Family Communications was called Small World Enterprises.

Fred Rogers founded Small World Enterprises in 1954. The for-profit company initially handled licensing and merchandise connected with Rogers' television work, including The Children's Corner and later Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. It also published related material, such as the 1954 book Our Small World.

In 1971, the organization was reorganized as a nonprofit and renamed Family Communications, Inc.; the change officially took effect on November 1 of that year. The company retained the Small World staff while taking on a broader mission focused on producing and supporting children's programming.

Family Communications produced Mister Rogers' Neighborhood for decades. After Fred Rogers' death, it became The Fred Rogers Company in 2010 and later Fred Rogers Productions in 2018. Those later names can cause confusion when researching the show's original production credits, which often list Family Communications or Small World Enterprises.
