Estée Lauder’s first fragrance was Youth-Dew, launched in 1953.
Youth-Dew was introduced as a bath oil rather than only as a conventional perfume. Because it scented the skin after bathing, customers could use it generously, helping the product become a major commercial success and establishing Estée Lauder as a significant beauty company.
The fragrance was created by perfumer Josephine Catapano. Its warm, spicy, and floral character helped distinguish it from the lighter scents commonly associated with the period. The product’s dual use also made it an important example of how packaging and application could change fragrance buying habits.
Youth-Dew is sometimes mistaken for Beautiful, which became one of Estée Lauder’s later signature fragrances. Beautiful was launched in 1985, more than three decades after Youth-Dew. Thus, the earlier product is the correct answer when asking for the company’s first fragrance.
