What was Elton John's debut single, released in 1968?

Elton John's debut single was “I've Been Loving You,” released in 1968. The song was issued by Philips in the United Kingdom and became the first single released under his developing professional identity.

The recording is unusual because Elton John later said he wrote the song himself, even though Bernie Taupin received a lyric-writing credit. John reportedly gave Taupin the credit so that his new songwriting partner could receive his first publishing royalties.

The single was withdrawn shortly after release and was not originally included on one of John's studio albums. Both sides eventually appeared in the 1992 Rare Masters box set, making the release especially interesting to collectors and early-career historians.

It should not be confused with “Your Song,” John's breakthrough hit from 1970, or “Lady Samantha,” his follow-up single from 1969.
