What was Duke Ellington’s birth name?

The story behind the answer

Duke Ellington’s birth name was Edward Kennedy Ellington.

He was born in Washington, D.C., on April 29, 1899, to James Edward Ellington and Daisy Kennedy Ellington. His parents encouraged refined manners and presentation, which contributed to the nickname “Duke,” given to him during his youth.

Ellington became one of the most important composers, pianists, and bandleaders in jazz history. His orchestra was a major force in big-band music, and he wrote works ranging from dance numbers to extended concert pieces.

“Duke Ellington” was his professional name, not a title inherited from nobility. He used it throughout his career, including during his decades of international touring and recording. He died in New York City on May 24, 1974.
