What was Dizzy Gillespie’s birth name?

The story behind the answer

Dizzy Gillespie’s birth name was John Birks Gillespie.

He was born on October 21, 1917, in Cheraw, South Carolina. “Dizzy” became his famous professional nickname, while “Birks” was his middle name. Gillespie became one of bebop’s central architects during the 1940s, alongside Charlie Parker.

His distinctive trumpet style included rapid, angular lines, high-register playing, and unusual harmonic ideas. He also helped popularize Afro-Cuban jazz through collaborations with musicians such as Chano Pozo. His puffed cheeks and upturned trumpet bell became instantly recognizable visual trademarks.

Gillespie is sometimes confused with his frequent collaborator Charlie Parker when people discuss bebop’s creators. Parker played alto saxophone, while Gillespie was primarily a trumpeter. Gillespie also served as a bandleader, composer, and influential teacher to later generations of jazz musicians.
