Answer
Second lieutenant
C.S. Lewis’s wartime rank in the British Army was second lieutenant.
Lewis served during the First World War after receiving officer training. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Somerset Light Infantry and was sent to France in 1917.
He fought at the Battle of Arras and was wounded by shrapnel in April 1918. His wartime experiences strongly affected his later writing, especially his reflections on suffering, friendship, loss, and faith.
Lewis was discharged from the army in December 1918. His military service is sometimes overshadowed by his academic career and fantasy novels, but it formed an important part of his early adulthood and appears in his autobiographical writing.
