What was C.S. Lewis’s first Oxford college, where he studied as an undergraduate?
Answer
University College, Oxford
Answer
University College, Oxford
C.S. Lewis studied as an undergraduate at University College, Oxford. He entered the college in 1917 after receiving a scholarship and beginning his Oxford education.
Lewis’s university years were interrupted by military service during the First World War. He served in the British Army and was wounded at the Battle of Arras in 1918. After recovering, he returned to Oxford and completed his studies in classics, philosophy, and English.
University College is often confused with Magdalen College because Lewis later spent much of his academic career at Magdalen. He became a fellow and tutor of Magdalen in 1925. His later Oxford identity is therefore strongly associated with Magdalen, but his undergraduate college was University College.
