What was C.S. Lewis’s final novel?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis’s final novel was Till We Have Faces.

Published in 1956, Till We Have Faces was Lewis’s last work of fiction in novel form. It retells the story of Cupid and Psyche through the voice of Orual, a ruler who struggles with possessiveness, resentment, and the consequences of demanding answers from the gods.

Lewis wrote the book with Joy Davidman, who became his wife in a civil marriage in 1956. The novel differs sharply in tone from the children’s Chronicles of Narnia and from the space fiction of his earlier career. It is psychologically complex, set in an imagined ancient kingdom, and concerned with how love can become possessive.

The Last Battle was the final Narnia novel published, appearing in 1956 as well, but it was not Lewis’s final novel overall. That distinction is why lists of his books can produce confusion when they focus only on the Narnia sequence.
