What was C.S. Lewis’s final Narnia novel in publication order?

The story behind the answer

The Last Battle was C.S. Lewis’s final Narnia novel in publication order. It was published in 1956 as the seventh and last volume of The Chronicles of Narnia.

The story takes place during the end of Narnia and follows a conflict involving the ape Shift, the donkey Puzzle, and a false representation of Aslan. King Tirian seeks help as the kingdom faces deception, political collapse, and war. The book concludes with the destruction of the old Narnian world and the revelation of a greater country beyond it.

The Last Battle won the Carnegie Medal in 1957, recognizing it as the outstanding children’s book of the preceding year. Publication order differs from the internal chronology: The Magician’s Nephew describes events before the other stories, but The Last Battle remains the final published volume and the narrative endpoint of the series.
