What was C.S. Lewis’s final completed work of fiction?

The story behind the answer

Till We Have Faces was C.S. Lewis’s final completed work of fiction.

Published in 1956, Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold reworks the ancient story of Cupid and Psyche. The narrator is Orual, a queen who reflects on her relationship with her half-sister Psyche and on her accusations against the gods.

Lewis considered the novel one of his best works. Unlike the Narnia books, it is set in a fictional ancient kingdom and does not present a clearly Christian fantasy world. Its themes include love, jealousy, self-knowledge, religious belief, and the difficulty of seeing one’s own motives honestly.

The Last Battle, published in 1956, was the final Narnia novel, not Lewis’s final completed fiction. That distinction is why the two titles are often confused. Till We Have Faces was also Lewis’s last novel published during his lifetime.
