What was C.S. Lewis’s final completed novel, published in 1956?

The story behind the answer

Till We Have Faces was C.S. Lewis’s final completed novel, published in 1956.

The full title is Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold. Lewis based the novel on the ancient Cupid and Psyche story, especially the version associated with the Roman writer Apuleius. He retells the myth from the perspective of Orual, a princess and queen whose difficult relationship with her half-sister, Psyche, drives the narrative.

Unlike the Narnia books, the novel is written primarily for adults and is set in a fictional ancient kingdom influenced by classical mythology. Its themes include jealousy, self-knowledge, religious faith, and the difficulty of honestly seeing one’s own motives.

Lewis considered it among his strongest works of fiction. Readers sometimes mistake The Last Battle for his final novel because it was the last published Narnia book, but Till We Have Faces was his final completed novel overall.
