Lewis entered the world on 29 November 1898 in Belfast, in what was then the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. He spent part of his childhood in the surrounding area before his education took him elsewhere.

Belfast is in present-day Northern Ireland, a detail that can cause confusion because Lewis spent much of his adult academic life in England. He studied at Oxford and later taught there for decades, but Oxford was not his birthplace.

His Northern Irish background remained part of his biography even as his public identity became closely associated with Oxford, Cambridge, Christian writing, and the Narnia stories. His brother Warren was also born in Belfast.
