Answer
English literature
Answer
English literature
C.S. Lewis’s academic subject at Oxford was English literature before he held a Cambridge chair.
Lewis became a Fellow and tutor in English at Magdalen College, Oxford, in 1925. His teaching and scholarship there focused on English language and literature, and he became known for his lectures, literary criticism, and historical range. His Oxford position lasted until 1954.
That year, Lewis moved to Cambridge University to become the first holder of the chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature. This change can cause confusion because Lewis is often described simply as an Oxford don. Oxford was his main academic home for nearly three decades, while Cambridge was the institution where he held his named professorship during the last part of his career.
