What was C.S. Lewis’s academic position at Cambridge beginning in 1954?

The story behind the answer

Beginning in 1954, C.S. Lewis was Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English at Cambridge University.

The position was newly established at Magdalene College, Cambridge, and Lewis became its first holder. He moved from Oxford after nearly thirty years as a fellow and tutor at Magdalen College. The Cambridge chair recognized his major contributions as a scholar of English literature.

Lewis’s academic interests included medieval literature, Renaissance writing, allegory, and literary history. His scholarly book The Allegory of Love, published in 1936, had already established his reputation among literary critics.

The two colleges have similar names but belong to different universities. Magdalen College, Oxford, was Lewis’s earlier workplace; Magdalene College, Cambridge, was where he held his Cambridge professorship until his death in 1963.
