Answer
English literature
C.S. Lewis’s academic field at Oxford before he moved to Cambridge was English literature. He taught English at Oxford University for many years before becoming the first holder of the Cambridge University chair of Medieval and Renaissance Literature in 1954.
Lewis was especially known as a medieval and Renaissance literary scholar. His academic books include The Allegory of Love, published in 1936, and English Literature in the Sixteenth Century, published in 1954. His scholarship covered subjects that reached far beyond his popular children’s fiction.
At Oxford, Lewis was a fellow and tutor of Magdalen College from 1925 until 1954. He was also associated with the Inklings, an informal literary discussion group that included J.R.R. Tolkien and Charles Williams.
Lewis’s move to Cambridge did not end his connection with Oxford. He continued to live near Oxford and remained closely linked with its intellectual and literary communities. His academic career therefore included major roles at both universities.
