What was C.S. Lewis’s 1960 book about four kinds of love called?

The story behind the answer

The Four Loves was C.S. Lewis’s 1960 book about four kinds of love.

The book grew from a 1958 BBC radio series and was published in 1960. Lewis examines affection, friendship, erotic love, and charity, using the Greek terms storge, philia, eros, and agape to distinguish forms of human attachment and divine love.

Lewis does not present the four loves as isolated categories that never overlap. Instead, he considers how they can support one another, become distorted, or depend on a larger theological framework. His discussion combines literary examples, philosophical argument, and observations about ordinary relationships.

The book is sometimes confused with Surprised by Joy, Lewis’s 1955 spiritual autobiography, or with A Grief Observed, his 1961 account of mourning. The Four Loves is specifically the work organized around four forms of love and their moral and spiritual significance.
