What was Beyoncé’s first solo U.S. number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100?

The story behind the answer

Beyoncé’s first solo U.S. number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100 was “Crazy in Love.”

Released in 2003, “Crazy in Love” was the lead single from Beyoncé’s debut solo album, Dangerously in Love. The song features a prominent sample from the Chi-Lites’ 1970 song “Are You My Woman (Tell Me So)” and includes a guest rap by Jay-Z. Its bold horn-driven sound helped establish Beyoncé as a major solo star after her success with Destiny’s Child.

“Crazy in Love” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for eight weeks. It also topped charts in several other countries and won Grammy Awards for Best R&B Song and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 2004 ceremony.

The song is sometimes confused with “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It),” another major Beyoncé hit that also reached number one. “Crazy in Love,” however, was the earlier song and the first of her solo singles to lead the U.S. chart.
