What villainous role did comedian Jim Carrey play in "Batman Forever"?

The story behind the answer

In Batman Forever, comedian Jim Carrey played the villainous role of The Riddler.

Carrey portrays Edward Nygma, an eccentric inventor and former Wayne Enterprises employee. After Bruce Wayne rejects Nygma’s mind-manipulation technology, Nygma turns against him, adopts the identity of The Riddler, and begins sending Batman elaborate puzzles and riddles.

The character’s plot centers on “The Box,” a device that collects human brainwaves and transfers information to its operator. Nygma uses the machine to increase his intelligence and eventually discovers that Bruce Wayne is Batman. He also joins forces with Tommy Lee Jones’s villain, Two-Face, to finance the device and terrorize Gotham City.

Batman Forever was released in 1995, directed by Joel Schumacher, and starred Val Kilmer as Batman. The Riddler is a long-standing DC Comics villain, usually identified as Edward Nygma or Edward Nashton in different continuities. Carrey’s brightly colored, highly theatrical performance became one of the film’s defining features.
