Answer
Echis carinatus
What venomous snake is also known as the saw-scaled viper? Echis carinatus is the saw-scaled viper.
This small viper occurs across parts of the Middle East, Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is usually under 60 centimetres long and is especially associated with dry, rocky or sandy habitats. Its keeled, serrated flank scales can produce a rasping sound when the snake coils and rubs its body together as a warning.
Echis carinatus is medically important in South Asia and is one of the “big four” Indian snakes traditionally linked with many serious bites. Its venom can disrupt clotting and damage tissues, although the danger varies with the population and the amount of venom delivered.
A common mix-up is treating every saw-scaled viper as this one species. Saw-scaled vipers belong to the genus Echis, which contains several species with similar common names. In this question, however, Echis carinatus is the standard species-level answer.
