What U.S. state did the Tri-State Tornado enter after Illinois?

The story behind the answer

After crossing Illinois, the Tri-State Tornado entered Indiana. Its track continued northeastward from southern Illinois into southwestern Indiana before the tornado dissipated in Pike County.

Indiana was the third and final state on the tornado’s traditionally documented path. The storm affected communities such as Griffin and Princeton, where destruction and loss of life were severe. Historical summaries attribute 95 fatalities to Indiana, following the much larger toll in Illinois.

The tornado’s route is often presented as a single track about 219 miles long, lasting roughly three and a half hours. Modern meteorological research has questioned whether such an exceptionally long path was truly one continuous tornado or a family of separate tornadoes produced by the same supercell. That debate does not change the established state sequence: Missouri, then Illinois, then Indiana.
