Guns N’ Roses is listed as originating in Los Angeles, California.

The band formed in Los Angeles in March 1985 from the city’s interconnected hard-rock scene. Its name combined the names of two earlier groups: Hollywood Rose, associated with Axl Rose and Izzy Stradlin, and L.A. Guns, associated with guitarist Tracii Guns. That lineage is why Los Angeles is given as the band’s origin.

The original formation included Rose, Stradlin, Guns, drummer Rob Gardner and bassist Ole Beich. Duff McKagan soon replaced Beich, while Slash and Steven Adler later joined the lineup that became widely known as the classic group.

The band’s Los Angeles beginnings are sometimes confused with the hometowns of individual members. Several members came from elsewhere, and the group later toured internationally, but its formation and origin are tied to Los Angeles. Guns N’ Roses released its breakthrough debut, Appetite for Destruction, in 1987.
