A supercell is the type of thunderstorm most likely to produce a tornado. Supercells are long-lived, highly organized storms containing a persistent rotating updraft called a mesocyclone.

Their rotation develops because winds change speed or direction with height, a condition known as vertical wind shear. The storm’s updraft tilts and concentrates that rotation, helping the storm maintain a structured circulation for hours. Tornado formation is especially favored when the updraft and the rear-flank downdraft interact in the right balance of inflowing warm air and descending air.

Most strong and violent tornadoes, including those rated EF3 through EF5, develop from supercells. Forecasters look for clues such as a rotating wall cloud, an overshooting top, organized inflow bands, and a radar hook echo. A rotating wall cloud often appears minutes before a tornado, although not every wall cloud produces one.

Supercells are not the only storms capable of tornadoes. Squall lines and multicell storms can produce tornadoes, particularly along boundaries or embedded circulations. Hurricanes can also generate tornadoes in their outer rain bands, but “supercell” remains the standard answer because it is the most common and important tornado-producing storm type.
