What type of restaurant did McDonald’s branding originally promote before its modern hamburger focus?
Answer
Barbecue restaurant
Answer
Barbecue restaurant
McDonald’s branding originally promoted a barbecue restaurant.
Richard and Maurice McDonald opened their first restaurant in San Bernardino, California, in 1940 as a barbecue drive-in. The business offered a broad menu and used the name McDonald’s Bar-B-Q. Its early identity therefore differed sharply from the streamlined hamburger-focused brand that later became famous.
In 1948, the brothers closed the restaurant temporarily and reopened it after developing the Speedee Service System. They reduced the menu and centered operations on hamburgers, cheeseburgers, fries, milkshakes, and other quickly prepared items. This operational change also created the foundation for a clearer and more repeatable brand.
The original barbecue identity is easy to miss because modern McDonald’s branding is strongly associated with burgers and the Golden Arches. The company’s later success came not from preserving the first menu, but from simplifying the concept and making its service model consistent enough to franchise.
