What type of memory did Nikola Tesla famously possess?

Nikola Tesla was famously said to possess a photographic memory. Biographical accounts describe him as able to retain extensive visual and verbal information, helping him imagine complicated machines and electrical systems in remarkable detail before building them.

Tesla claimed that he could read and remember entire books, and he often described inventions as fully formed mental images. He reportedly visualized a machine operating, inspected its parts mentally, and corrected faults without first constructing a physical model. He credited some of his unusual memory and creative abilities to his mother, Đuka Mandić, who was also known for memorization and practical ingenuity.

“Photographic memory” is the familiar popular expression; “eidetic memory” is the related technical term often used in biographies. Scientists distinguish these concepts and have not established photographic memory as literal, flawless storage of everything seen. Tesla’s exceptional recall and visualization are therefore best understood as a famous biographical description, not proof of scientifically perfect memory.
