What type of government ruled Italy during World War II?

The government that ruled Italy during World War II was Fascist, under dictator Benito Mussolini. Italy remained formally a kingdom, with King Victor Emmanuel III as head of state, but real political power was concentrated in Mussolini and the National Fascist Party.

Mussolini became prime minister in 1922 and gradually dismantled Italy’s liberal parliamentary system. By the 1920s, opposition parties, independent newspapers, and meaningful elections had been suppressed, creating a one-party dictatorship. Italy entered World War II in June 1940 on the side of Germany and Japan as a member of the Axis powers.

There is an important wartime complication. In July 1943, the king dismissed and arrested Mussolini, and a new Italian government later signed an armistice with the Allies. Germany then installed Mussolini as leader of the Italian Social Republic in northern Italy, a separate Nazi-backed Fascist regime that lasted until 1945.
