What type of fuel is used by most professional monster trucks?

The story behind the answer

Most professional monster trucks use methanol as their fuel.

Methanol is a high-octane alcohol fuel used widely in racing because it can support high-performance engines and burns with a relatively less opaque flame and smoke profile than gasoline in many accident situations. Monster truck engines are generally large-displacement, supercharged V8s built to produce enormous power for jumps, rapid acceleration, and heavy landings.

Methanol is not the same as ordinary automotive alcohol blends. It is toxic and must be handled carefully, and teams use specialized fuel systems and tuning to match its properties. Because methanol contains less energy per unit of volume than gasoline, engines typically consume more of it, but its cooling effect and resistance to detonation are valuable in racing applications.

The fuel question is sometimes muddled by publicity around “alternative fuels” or by confusing monster trucks with different off-road vehicles. In organized monster truck competition, methanol is the standard answer, not diesel, propane, or pump gasoline.
