Floral shirts are especially associated with modern Songkran celebrations in Thailand.
Bright floral shirts have become a recognizable part of Songkran fashion, particularly during public water festivities. Their colorful tropical patterns suit the holiday’s cheerful atmosphere and are practical for an occasion in which clothing may become wet.
The shirts are a modern popular-culture symbol rather than a required religious garment. People attending temple ceremonies may dress more modestly, while street participants often choose quick-drying clothes, protective footwear, and clothing that can withstand water and powder.
Songkran clothing traditions also reflect the festival’s mixed character. It is simultaneously a Buddhist observance, a family holiday, a traditional New Year, and a large public celebration. Floral shirts therefore identify the contemporary festive mood but do not replace older practices such as merit-making or paying respect to elders.
