What type of bird is Kevin in Up?

The story behind the answer

What type of bird is Kevin in Up? Kevin is a snipe. In the film, the name refers to a rare, fictional giant bird living around Paradise Falls, not to one specific real-world snipe species. Russell gives the bird the name Kevin before learning that she is female.

Pixar describes Kevin as a 13-foot-tall, flightless bird with brightly colored feathers and a long, flexible neck. Her unusual appearance, speed and size are deliberately fantastical, helping the character feel like an undiscovered creature from the remote South American landscape. Charles Muntz has spent years trying to capture her as proof that his earlier discovery was genuine.

The answer can cause confusion because real snipes do exist. Real snipes are generally small wading birds in the sandpiper family, with long bills and camouflaged plumage. Kevin does not resemble an ordinary snipe in size or body shape; “snipe” is the fictional label used in Up. She is also not an eagle, toucan or parrot, although her colorful design can invite those guesses.
